The attention economy refers to the idea that attention is a limited commodity that is bought, sold, and competed over in a digital marketplace. The term was popularized by Michael Goldhaber, who wrote in a 1997 Wired article that "the currency of the New Economy won't be money, but attention - A radical theory of value."
Studies have shown that the average human attention span has decreased from 12 seconds to 8 seconds over the past 20 years. This is shorter than the attention span of a goldfish, which is 9 seconds. The constant notifications and distractions from our phones have made it difficult for us to focus and concentrate for extended periods of time.
